🏗️ Fence Calculator
Calculate fence posts, rails, and pickets needed
How Fence Calculation Works
Formula
Posts = (Length / Spacing) + 1; Rails = Sections × Rails/Section
- 1Enter the total fence length in feet.
- 2Set the spacing between posts (typically 6-8 feet).
- 3Posts needed = sections + 1 (including end posts).
- 4Rails are calculated by multiplying sections by rails per section.
- 5Pickets are estimated from the total length times pickets per foot.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far apart should fence posts be?
Standard post spacing is 6-8 feet for wood fences. In areas with high wind, use 6-foot spacing. For chain link fences, 10-foot spacing is common.
How many rails do I need per section?
Most privacy fences use 2-3 rails per section. Short fences (under 4 ft) need 2 rails. Tall fences (6 ft+) should have 3 rails for stability.
How deep should fence posts be?
Posts should be buried 1/3 of their total length. For a 6-foot fence with 8-foot posts, dig holes at least 24-30 inches deep. Set posts in concrete for maximum stability.
